Helpful Hints in the Library

If anyone has any great ideas that have helped them in the library please let me know. I am trying a variety of things some that have worked and others that I have tossed out the moment I tried them.

One idea that I tried was the celebration of Dr. Suess' birthday. I got a Cat in the Hat balloon and enough booksmarks for all the students in the school. Pre-K got stickers not bookmarks. My aide and I pulled all of the Dr. Suess books off of the shelves and made another display area for them. I found some Dr. Suess websites that I showed the students and many of their teachers let them explore the websites during their computer lab time. Here are some of the sites I found below.

I really wish I had more time to explore all of the wonderful resources that are on the internet, but at least there are a few.

Again, being a new librarian I am always looking for new and exciting things to do with my students that will engage them and help them learn. If anyone has more great ideas please let me know.

Ideas to Help You Share Great Books

I have always enjoyed reading in front of children, but I have discovered that sometimes the students have a hard time seeing the cute details of the illustrations. I went to visit another librarian in my district and I noticed that she used an AVer Vision CP300 along with an LCD projector.

Now again I have only been a librarian since the beginning of this school year, so many of you might have already known and have used this method but it was completely new to me. I will also say that my school is an older school and we only have about 7 to 8 LCD projectors and only 5 AVer machines schoolwide, so it's not common use for the teachers to be using this type of technology all of the time.

I have ask the students what they prefer for me to read in front of them or to read using the AVer machine and they always vote for me to read using the AVer machine. For more information about this product please visit http://www.aver.com/presentation/.

I think that the students really enjoy seeing all of the details in the drawings. So many of the books that are published have very small details that are usually the best part of the book and with these products you can show the students the book up close and personal.

Good Books That Students Love!

I realize that there are so many good books out there, but I would like to tell you about one of my and my students personal favorites. I would love to hear from those of you that have other ideas of what other activities can be done with these books or suggestions and activities for other books.

How many of you have read the Skippyjon Jones books? They are fabulous. They have gotten some good reviews and your students will love them. My daughter loves us to read them to her almost everynight.

The books are all written by Judy Schachner. I personally think that she has a great storyline for her funny little character and hope that she will write more books featuring him or others like him.

Skippyjon Jones is a boy Siamese kitten that thinks that he is a Chihuahua. In the books Skippyjon Jones and Skippyjon Jones in the Doghouse the little kitten finds himself as a great sword fighter and even has a band of banditos. They both are hilarious and even if you do not have a great spanish accent, which my husband informs me that I do not, the students and your own children will love the adventures of this adorable kitten.

Another one of my favorites is the The Crayon Box that Talked by Shane DeRolf. This book is a wonderful book that illustrates the importance of differences. At the beginning of the story the crayons do not like each other because each is so different. However, the little girl that buys the box takes the box home and lay all the colors out and begins to create a picture. As the colors see how the other colors are used they begin to see that being different is good.
